American cartoonist Al Capp introduced the concept of Sadie Hawkins Day into his long-running syndicated Li’l Abner comic strip. Sadie Hawkins Day (named for 'the homeliest gal in the hills'), in the hillbilly town of Dogpatch, always featured a race for spinsters. Any bachelor, if caught, must marry the spinster who caught him. Sadie Hawkins Day, made its debut in the strip published November 15, 1937, but by association with a Scottish tradition, February 29 is given that name.

Absolutely, I did. No person in their real mind ever called me bashful. I walked right up to the captain of the football team and "tagged" him. I didn't even know his name, but I knew he was the captain. (At our school if you were "tagged" you couldn't refuse.)
I thought I was the only one that remembered Sadie Hawkins Day.
